Farmer Dan's Special Pumpkin Patch Once, a very long time ago there was a farmer named Farmer Dan, who lived on a magical island that grew pumpkins that were anything but ordinary. You see on this island, in Farmer Dan's pumpkin patch, none of the pumpkins were orange or necessarily round. The pumpkins were a rainbow of colors and designs, not to mention a variety of shapes. You would see red, purple and yellow pumpkins that were in shapes of triangles, squares and rectangles. Some even grew with polka dots and stripes! Oh, and I almost forgot, once a pumpkin was picked from the patch a Jack-O-Lantern face magically appeared on it. Each year people would travel from far and near to pick one of Farmer Dan's special pumpkins. Unfortunately, Farmer Dan grew old and is no longer able to plant his pumpkin patch. You can, however, go to his island and and request a magic pumpkin seed to grow in your own back yard. Last year I planted a seed and much to my surprise I grew a blue, square pumpkin covered with lots of yellow polks dots. When I picked it, a Jack-O-Lantern face appeared, with two black oval eyes, one purple square nose and a big red mouth that is smiling with one brown tooth in the middle. Take a look~you'd have to agree it's pretty awesome!
This year I have seeds to share from my magic pumpkin. I want to share one seed with each of you in the hopes that you will plant it and grow your own special pumpkin to share with your wiki parnter. Read ALL of the directions (there are three parts to this assignment) below to see how you are going to share your pumpkin with your wiki partner.
Part One-Using your imagination is essential when completing this assignment! Please take one of my magic pumpkin seeds and plant it in your back yard. Take care to plant it in a place where it will get lots of warmth from the sun. You also will need to ensure it receives plenty of water and TLC from you! Once it is grown (these pumpkins grow quickly) gently pick it for your wiki partner, keeping it's stem intact. Remember once picked the Jack-O-Lantern face will magically appear on your pumpkin and will surely put a smile on your face. Bring your pumpkin into your house and using a white piece of paper, please draw it. It might help to think that you are taking a picture of your pumpkin in your head and then drawing what it looks like on the paper. Remember all of the pumpkins grown from these seeds will not be typical, but rather unique and colorful!
Part Two- Once you have drawn your pumpkin you will grab a piece of paper and a pencil and write a descriptive paragraph explaining to your wiki partner, what the pumpkin looks like. It is important that you be as specific as possible when describing the pumpkin to your partner. Use descriptive words to help your partner see the same picture of the pumpkin in her/his mind (visualize) when reading your description, that you did when writing it. Below is an example of a descriptive paragraph: I grew a special pumpkin just for you from the seed given to me by Mrs. C. I took care to plant my pumpkin seed outside my bedroom window where the sun is warm. The pumpkin I am giving to you is quite unique, you might say, one of a kind! It is a purple square with small yellow polka dots all over it. The stem is brown and it has one green leaf on the right side of the stem. When I picked the pumpkin the Jack-O-Lantern face appeared. The face has two star shaped, white eyes with one small black spot in the middle of each star. The nose is smaller than the eyes and is an black oval. The final detail is the mouth. The lips are red, they are smiling and there is one brown tooth in the middle, on the bottom of his mouth. I told you your pumpkin was unique! I sure hope you can visualize the pumpkin I grew especially for you!
Once you have written and proof read your descriptive paragraph (taking care to check for spelling, grammar and punctuation) you will head to the DISCUSSION FEATURE ON YOUR GROUP PAGE and post it.
Part Three- You will navigate to your group page and read about the special pumpkin your partner grew just for you! Respond to their descriptive paragraph by asking questions (if something is not clear) or by making a positive comment. It is VERY important that you are able to visualize the pumpkinin your head since your next assignment will include you being able to replicate the pumpkin. So now is the time to ask questions!!!
